METHODS AND PRACTICES IN DIGITAL HUMANITIES AND INFORMATION STUDIES
Abstract
The increasing integration of computational technologies into humanities and information science research has transformed methodological approaches and knowledge production systems. This study examines the methods and practices in Digital Humanities and Information Studies using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) to synthesize empirical evidence on how digital tools, infrastructures, and interdisciplinary practices shape contemporary scholarship. The SLR approach was selected for its capacity to provide a structured, transparent, and replicable synthesis of diverse studies within this inherently transdisciplinary field, which spans humanities research, information science, computer science, and data analytics. The review identifies key methodological domains, including computational text analysis, digital archiving and curation, data visualization, and geospatial humanities, as central to the operationalization of digital scholarship. These approaches enable large-scale analysis, enhance interpretive depth, and expand access to cultural and informational resources. However, their adoption and effectiveness are influenced by factors such as digital literacy, infrastructural disparities, methodological fragmentation, and ethical concerns related to data representation, bias, and sustainability. By systematically synthesizing existing literature, the study not only maps the evolving methodological landscape of Digital Humanities and Information Studies but also critically evaluates the practices, tools, and frameworks shaping the field. The findings reveal the emergence of hybrid research ecosystems that integrate computational and interpretive approaches while highlighting persistent gaps in standardization, accessibility, and long-term sustainability. The paper provides a pathway for advancing digital scholarship by emphasizing the need for capacity building, inclusive infrastructures, and rigorous methodological frameworks to support equitable and sustainable research practices.
